I made this piece after my first winter in Buffalo, NY. I used to visit Tift Nature Preserve and walk its 5 miles of trails through marsh, prairie, and forest. One day in April, flocks of Red-winged blackbirds returned to the preserve. Their vitality and song were especially vibrant to my wintered eyes. Great Lake Red-wing populations travel approximately 1200 km during migration.
